Reddaway makes strong showing at NTDC

Reddaway NTDC WinnersCongratulations to Jeff Payne (Utah, photo, left) and John Lopez (Colorado, photo, right) for their outstanding performances at this year's  National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) last weekend in Orlando, Fla.

Jeff took home first place nationally in the Twin Trailers class, and John placed third in the Straight Truck class.

"This is my 11th straight appearance at the nationals. I've been working that long to get the top prize in my category," Jeff says. "I finally got the win because of two things: persistence and also great coaching and support from my wife, Rhonda. I've been asked what I did differently this year. I know I was at the bottom of the pack after the drive-offs, and so I was just hoping to place second or third. But I was a lot calmer this year. I didn't get all worked up and that paid off for me big-time."

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) sponsors the NTDC, also known as the "Super Bowl of Safety," where more than 400 drivers compete for national titles in nine vehicle classes and the coveted National Grand Champion title. The drivers accumulate points through a written examination, pre-trip inspection test and a skills test.

Housing starts at five-month high

Couple looking at house with For Sales sign in frontExceeding forecasts, June U.S. housing starts were up 15 percent from the prior month, according to a July report by the Commerce Department.

In addition, building permits were up 2.5 percent for the month, an indication of future construction.


Tire prices treading up

tiresTire manufacturers faced with the rising cost of raw materials, such as natural rubber and petrochemical-based synthetics, are increasing the price of tires and retread rubber this summer from 9 percent to 12 percent.

One manufacturer notes a strong possibility exists for an additional price hike later in the third quarter.

Manufacturing slows in July

man working at machineThe Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index for July dropped 4.4 points to a two-year low, hitting 50.9. An index below 50 signifies manufacturing contraction, above 50, expansion.

During this same period, the ISM sub-index for new orders was down 2.4 points to 49.2, and the inventory index dropped 4.8 points to 49.3.

Scott Lowrimore, Reddaway coverage mapIt's a good day for Scott Lowrimore when he sees the account managers who report to him overcoming hurdles, learning new skills, and getting better at their jobs. "We have a ton of people with a can-do attitude who truly want to help our customers," says Scott.

Scott is an area sales director, charged with keeping his team on task for increasing business in an area that includes Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

"I try to help our account managers balance the highs and lows of the job," Scott says. "I can tell when reps are not having the best days, and try to help them work through them. I also congratulate them on their wins, and balance that with their need to keep prospecting."

Going on 25 years in the industry, a dozen of those with Reddaway, Scott has been in his current role for more than eight years. "Reddaway graciously brought me on as a city sales manager in Denver. After three years, I did a short stint as a service center manager before moving to Salt Lake City and my current job."

Redding, Calif.

Reddomg highlighted on California map, sites of interestThe "Second Sunniest City in the United States," (Yuma, Ariz., claims the sunshine title), Redding boasts 250 days of beautiful weather each year.

What do you do with all that sunshine? Explore the great hiking trails of the Trinity Alps. Fish the Sacramento River. Take a houseboat out for a cruise on Lake Shasta. Or simply enjoy the beauty of the volcanic mountain peaks of Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta.

In addition to nature's creations, some of the beauty found in Redding is manmade. The free art museum, also known as City Hal, features works of local artists and traveling exhibits. The Sundial Bridge, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, is a functional timepiece that crosses the Sacramento River, creating a visually inspiring way to connect the city's 300-acre natural history park.

Reddaway has called Redding home since 1986 and operates a 14-dock door there. Originally developed because of its location halfway between the company's Portland headquarters and Los Angeles, Redding is one of the smaller service centers in the Reddaway network.

"We're a close-knit family, which our customers relate to," says Service Center Manager Jeff Miller. "They may come to us because of an unsatisfactory experience with another provider, but they stick with us because of our customer service and service standards."

Jeff adds, "We have employees with 18 to 25 years and others with seven to 10 years. This mix gives us the opportunity to share old ideas with new ones. The results are better service to current customers and a growing list of new customers. Really, it's our work environment that's helped us gain ground with the businesses that are here."
