U.S. manufacturing expands in February

Smelting plantFor the seventh straight month, U.S. manufacturing expanded, despite a dip in the Institute of Supply Management index from 58.4 in January to 56.5 in February (an index above 50 indicates expansion).

In another sign of an economic recovery, U.S. consumer spending was up 0.5 percent in January, the fourth consecutive month showing increased spending.

Walmart announces emissions-reduction initiative

leaves with world on themStriving to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the next five years, Walmart will be working with suppliers throughout the entire product lifecycle "from the sourcing of the raw materials to the manufacturing . . . to its transportation and how customers use it, dispose of it, and recycle it."

U.S. new home sales drop to lowest recorded level

home under constructionJanuary new home sales fell to an annual pace of 309,000—with regional sales down 35 percent in the Northeast, 12 percent in the West and 9.5 percent in the South.

Sales in the Midwest were up 2.1 percent.

The U.S. median sales price was down 2.4 percent from January 2009.

The number of unsold homes increased.
